Introductie

Voor wie in 1977 de gezegende leeftijd van zeven bereikt had, was Star Wars de grootste en beste film ooit vertoond op het witte doek. Het oneindige heelal, dat voordien enkel op effectieve wijze in beeld gebracht was in Stanley Kubricks cinefiele klassieker 2001: A Space Odyssey, openbaarde diverse werelden binnenin een mythologisch, door vreemde creaturen bevolkt universum, waarvan niemand echt weet of het een toekomstbeeld, iets uit een ver verleden of een alternatieve realiteit is. Alsof het openingsstatement “A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away” nog niet duidelijk genoeg maakt dat Star Wars een visueel modern sprookje is, worden we getrakteerd op een bijna naïef simpel verhaal over een arme jongen die, bijgestaan door een bont gezelschap, op queeste vertrekt om een prinses uit de klauwen van een Kwade Heer te bevrijden. Star Wars is een van de meest ultieme versies van de strijd tussen het Goede en het Kwade (de onschuldige Luke Skywalker versus de halfmechanische Darth Vader) en regisseur George Lucas geeft ondertussen al dan niet bereidwillig toe dat het verhaal beïnvloedt werd door sciencefictionseries zoals Flash Gordon, de “serials” uit de jaren ’30, The Lord of the Rings van Tolkien en zelfs het oeuvre van Akira Kurosawa.
